Tackle needed

The most important thing you will need for lure fishing is some wire traces to attach your lures to your line, or the pike will bite you off.

Rods

The type of rod you use depends quite a lot on the type of fishing you are doing. They are generally between 6 and 8 foot long and have a casting weight of between 1/2 oz and 6oz.

For spinning and lure fishing you can use a rod up to 8 foot long and you will want a casting weight of between 1/2 oz and 11/2 oz.

For jerk baits and large spinnerbaits you want a rod of around 6 foot long with a casting weight up to 6oz for the biggest jerk baits. The reason for using a rod this short is, it is easier to put the twitches into the action of the jerk baits.

Reels

Most lure anglers use multipliers but there is nothing to stop you using fixed spoon reels. The main advantage with multipliers is they tend to be stronger than fixed spool reels and the spool engages quicker.

Line

For light spinning work there in no problem using 10lb to 15lb nylon. For large lures, jerk baits and large spinnerbaits, braid is the most popular as you have more control of the lure, with no stretch in braid you can put a better action into your lures. Braid of up to 100lb breaking strain can be used. With braid you instantly know if a pike touches you lure, with nylon this can be lost in the stretch in the line.
