Scaling Dam (Yorkshire)

Even though this water is in North Yorkshire it is still under the control of Northumbrian Water. This water is gin clear, it is approximately 110 acres in size and goes to about 30 feet at it's deepest. Pike have been seen by the bailiff and I have had reports of pike being caught on the fly and worm to 18lb. We will be allowed to fish baits and lures, with only live baits being banned.

March 1st/2nd/8th and 9th 2003

I have confirmed with Northumbrian Water the above dates for more pike trials on Scaling Dam. We have already proved that pike are prescent in the water, now we can try to find out how many and how big, is the 18lb'er the biggest or are there so real monsters in there.

Read your February issue of Pikelines for booking details if you are a member of the PAC. Otherwise you can e-mail me for details of how to join the PAC as these dates can only be fished by members of the PAC.

November 2nd and 3rd 2002

On the first of the two days no pike were caught, but at least pike were seen. With only half a dozen members fishing it was hoped that with more members booked for the second day that our chances would be better for pike to be landed.

Our hopes were realised on the second day with Andy Whitehead (pictured opposite) and George Dixon, both members of the Tyneside region landed pike of 3-4lb, both taken on lures. Dave North of Darlington and Teesside region landed a pike of 5lb this fell to "spring dog" lure.

The most frustrating day was that of Marcus Wood (Darlington and Teesside region) who hooked into a double figure pike on a spoon, only for it to tail walk and throw the hook. To make matters worse he then managed to hook a pike of about 8lb on dead bait; having got this fish to within inches of the net, it also managed to throw the hooks. Again on the second day there were other pike seen in the margins, these were estimated to be into double figures.

Between the Scaling Dam and Fontburn Reservoir events £290.00 was raised for charity.

It is hoped more events can be arranged for the spring of 2003.
