Region 24 - South East Northumberland
February 2002
Mark Ackerley slideshow
This was Marks second visit to our region in the last 2 years, on this occasion he was to do a talk on pike fishing in Great Britain and the metods and rigs he uses. This was another well attended event with a lot of new faces through the door.
The pike fishing Mark covered was on the still waters, rivers and canals he fishes near his home in the Selby region of Yorkshire. this included the size of pike you can expect from the various types of water and the methods he favoured at the ifferent venues. He also mentioned some wates that are further afield, such as Chew Valley which he was about to fish for the first time.
In the second half of his talk, Mark covered the type of rigs he uses, such as: -
|
Straight leger |
|
Running leger |
|
Float fished pattenoster |
A lot of the developement he has done on the rigs he uses comes from the Carp rigs that are available in the tackle shops, such as helicopter rigs.
Following on from the rigs he uses, Mark covered the type of lures he is using from Rapala super shad rap to Jerk baits.
As always this was a very enjoyable evening and if you get the chance to go to one of Mark's shows I'm sure you will enjoy the evening and you will pick up some useful tips that might help you catch a fish of a life time.

Charity presentation
The most important part of the evening was the presentation of the cheques to Cancer Research UK and Jack Charltons Disabled Anglers Trust and the presentation of 4 sets of tackle to the Pearson family. The second part of the evening was a slide show by Dave Foster on lure fishing for pike and barble fishing.
The firstPresentation of the evening was the 4 sets of tackle to the Pearson Family, this tackle was very kindly donated by Angling leisure sports of South Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne and Shakespeare fishing tackle.

Mike Bell met the Pearson family at an event organised by Jack Charlton's Disabled Anglers. After finding out how much the brothers enjoyed angling and that they were restricted by a lack of tackle, South East Northumberland Region agreed with Mike to use some of the money raised from previous charity raffles to buy some fishing tackle for the brothers. Mike approached Alan Rowell of Angling Leisure Sport of Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne (http://www.angling-leisure-sport.co.uk/), to see if what it would cost. Alan said he would see what he could arrange and would be in contact. We were all amazed when we found out what Alan had arranged at no cost to the region. He had persuaded Shakespeare to part with 4 rods and 4 reels and he donated landing nets keepnets and all the other tackle they would need. The region cannot thank Alan enough for what he has done for these 4 lads, they will be wanting to go fishing every day now they have the tackle.
The next presentation was made my Robert Murray (North East Liasison Officer for the PAC) to Brian Wilkin (representing Cancer Researh UK), the cheque for £1135.00 was raised from the recent privileged access events on Kielder Water and Fontburn Reservoir and raffles run by region 24. Brian informed us that Cancer Research UK came into being in February 2002, as a result of the merger of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and Cancer Research Campaign. Cancer Research UK, as its name suggests has research establishments through out the UK. At these research units scientists and doctors are funded to develop new drugs for the treatment of Cancers. The unit in the North East of England is based at the Medical School of Newcastle University. The money raised and handed over tonight will assist Prof Hilary Calvert, Director of the research unit in Newcastle, in their quest to develop new Cancer drugs.
Unfortunately the presentation to Jack Charltons Disabled Anglers Trust could not be done on the night, so Robert Murray arranged to meet David Carrick, representing the trust and Don Coe of Northumbrian Water at Whittle Dene Reservoir to hand over the cheque for £637.50 from the event on Fontburn Reservoir. With the money raised from the event on Kielder water in September of 2001 this brought the total raised over the last pike season to £905.00.

This brings the total raised from events run by pike anglers in the North East over the last few years to £5000.00
Dave Foster slide show
The second half of the evening was a slide show given by dave foster (the promotions and PAC committee member). His show coverd lure fishing on the canals near his home in Preston and Derwent Water in the Lakes District.
Daves main passion seems to be lure fishing on the canals near where he lives and on Derwent Water. He mentioned that the pike in his local canal have genetic flaw that gives the local pike a very slow growth rate and they very rarely managed to get to double figures (the pic on the left is a typical of these pike and about as big as they get). Another point of interest was his use of a planer board on the canals, I had read articles about their use but Dave is the first piker I have met who has caught pike using one, this may be worth a try on the Tees. Dave might even try the Tees as I think if he sees a puddle he'll throw a lure at it, especially a "Manta", he even convinced me into buying some.
The final part of Dave's show goes onto Barbel fishing on his local river. He has had barbel to double figure from this water which isn't rated as a good barbel river.
Dave's show is very entertaining and informative and he proved he has a good sence of humour the way he put up with the friendly heckling from the Pearson boys. The only thing is don't mention football, he supports some team called the "red devils" whoever they are? apparently they haven't won anything this year.
If you get the chance to go to one of Dave's shows you will be in for a good evening.
Alan on a day out with the family, showing them how to use their new tackle. The size of fish doesn't matter.
